The Homeland of Buttero Leather – Tuscany

With an area of nearly 23,000 square kilometers, Tuscany is a well-known destination in central Italy. Its capital is Florence, and the region has a population of over 4 million people.

Tuscany has a rich historical background and is considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. It has been home to many influential figures in the fields of art and science. Renowned for its coastal tourism, Tuscany is a popular destination in Italy, featuring major tourist attractions such as Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Siena, and Versilia.

Famous landmarks in Tuscany include the Historic Center of Florence, Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, the Historic Center of Siena, the Medici Villas and Gardens, and over 120 nature reserves. Thanks to these attractions, Florence remains a top tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors each year.

The Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium

Established in 1994 by a small group of Tuscan tanners, The Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium quickly expanded and gained many new members.

Currently, more than 20 tanneries in Tuscany are associated with this consortium, sharing a deep passion for vegetable tanning. The high quality of Tuscan vegetable-tanned leather results from extensive expertise, a skillful combination of technology and experience, and a strong connection to the region’s lifestyle and culture.

The consortium acts as both a guarantor and ambassador of Tuscan leather excellence worldwide. It has established the "Pelle Conciata al Vegetale in Toscana" (Tuscan Vegetable Tanned Leather) brand, ensuring the quality and authenticity of leather produced by its member tanneries.

Buttero Leather

Buttero leather is a type of genuine vegetable-tanned (veg-tan) cowhide produced by Conceria Walpier, a renowned tannery from Tuscany, Italy. This leather preserves the full characteristics of natural leather, featuring a smooth and glossy surface with deep, rich colors that create unique tonal variations compared to other types of leather.

Buttero is one of the rare leather types tanned using a 100% natural vegetable-based process. It has a texture ranging from soft to firm, depending on the leather section—from belly to back. Additionally, it has a distinctive herbal scent, often resembling dried grass or, at times, a sweet, candy-like aroma.

As a veg-tan leather, Buttero is entirely processed using natural plant-based tannins, meaning its surface retains natural marks such as insect bites or scars. For this reason, tanneries carefully select each hide to minimize imperfections.

The natural surface of Buttero leather is its greatest advantage, making each piece uniquely beautiful. Since it is dyed naturally, the leather develops deep, rich colors, ensuring that no two pieces look exactly the same.

One important note about Buttero leather is that its surface is highly prone to scratches. However, over time, these scratches gradually fade as dirt and oils from handling accumulate. This characteristic contributes to the development of a unique patina, enhancing its beauty and making each item crafted from Buttero leather truly one of a kind.
